WHICH HAS THE GREATER DEMOCRACY?

Georgia lawmakers have recently passed SB 202, sections of the bill will change the absentee ballot as well as early voting laws, by design aimed to increase

voter suppression. So will key components of the bill make Georgia the state, less democratic than Georgia the country (the one beside Russia and birthplace of Stalin)?

ARE MOBILE VOTING BUSES ALLOWED?

Bans the use of mobile voting buses for early voting except in emergencies. So, for example, if you live in Fulton County for example, you’ll no longer be able to use one of the two mobile voting buses the county purchased for use in elections.

In terms of an emergency, the board must provide more notice about emergency rules and has a much more limited scope in enacting said rules.

What does banning mobile voting buses do? That’s right, reduces access to vote in areas with weaker voting infrastructure.

ARE MOBILE VOTING BUSES ALLOWED?

In addition, under the Election Code of Georgia Article 26 (Powers of the Precinct Election Commission), C, states: Establishes a mobile ballot box based on the applications and applications of the voters.

In other words mobile ballot boxes can be granted based on voters needs.

It seems Georgia has a robust set of rules around the deployment of mobile ballot boxes. That said, no reference pertaining directly to mobile voting ‘buses’ could be found and for fear of comparing apples with oranges, we award Georgia the country only a half tick here.

CAN YOU DISTRIBUTE WATER AND FOOD TO PEOPLE WHO ARE WAITING IN LINE TO VOTE?

The new rules prohibit anyone except poll workers from handing out water to voters in line, and passing out food and water to voters within 150 feet that serves as a poll, inside a polling place or within 25 feet of any voter standing in line.

In other words, passing out food and drink to voters is now criminalized aside from poll workers passing out water to voters.

Overcrowded polling stations with longer lines typically correlate to lower income neighborhoods. Preventing people basic human comfort when waiting to vote actively deters voters from casting their vote.

CAN YOU DISTRIBUTE WATER AND FOOD TO PEOPLE WHO ARE WAITING IN LINE TO VOTE?

No known prohibitions regarding food and water at polling stations.

Understanding that basic human comfort needs when waiting to poll should be met.
